Student Intern-Public Policy and Advocacy

Position Purpose: Under the direction of the, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy, the Student Intern will support the research and policy program in the Community Building Department of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. He/She will be exposed to a dynamic work environment and have opportunities to learn about various aspects of the Community Building Department.

Principle Responsibilities: 

  • Provide research support related to current policy and legislative priorities.
  • Develop briefing papers, reports, fact sheets and other educational materials.
  • Assist with legislative campaigns, coalition building and media strategies.
  • Provide administrative support including database management and data entry.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working towards a degree in a communications, social science or policy-related field, preferably at the graduate level.
  • Organized and ability to prioritize competing assignments within deadlines.
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication.
  • Good judgment and initiative.
  • Discretion in working with highly confidential information.
  • Fully proficient and experienced in latest Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Required Hours:

Designated hours will be determined by the supervisor.

Please note that this is a learning experience and the student intern is not replacing a regular staff position.  Both United Way and the student understand that no wages will be given for the internship period. There is no promise of a job following this program.
